Executive Director - VP Portfolio Program Management

Ocular Therapeutix is seeking an exceptional Executive Director/VP of Program Management to join its senior team to lead and provide critical strategic and day-to-day management support for all pre-clinical and clinical programs and project management aspects of the organization, and the overarching company portfolio. This is a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to create and drive the function through the development and deployment of processes, tools, and initiatives within a fast-paced, rapidly scaling environment.

The successful candidate will be required to independently manage, innovate and continually improve project management, project planning, scheduling and cost management in conjunction with the functional heads across the portfolio of pre-clinical/clinical programs, based on direct experience and/or the ability to translate prior experiences to a new challenge.

This individual must be able to support key drug programs any type of project, irrespective of complexity, technology, novelty, or pace. Further accountability includes portfolio management, i.e., planning, coordinating activities, and collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to enable the project to meet critical milestones and corporate objectives within regulatory guidelines.

In addition to bringing a strong entrepreneurial orientation along with highly developed leadership and team building skills, he/she must communicate clearly, be comfortable voicing their opinions, be highly collaborative, and create strong alignment in the organization by neutralizing organizational tension and challenges where they emerge.



  • Proactive identification, design, implementation and continual improvement of project and portfolio management systems and information sharing, including planning, scheduling, and cost management across the portfolio of clinical programs.
  • Development and tracking of corporate goals and milestones. Plan and execute a 3-year program management strategy to support and drive corporate strategy.
  • Operations responsibility for the budget in conjunction with the functional heads, resourcing models, key company agendas and meetings, identification and prioritization of issues, action assignment and tracking of assignments and projects to satisfactory completion.
  • Set clear performance standards and hold self and organization accountable for achieving results.
  • Ensure effective collaboration among teams to optimize pipeline execution and cost management.
  • Create strong relationships with functional leads, HR, Finance and other key stakeholders to enhance communication and organizational effectiveness.
  • Manage formal or ad hoc internal processes regarding project decision points, anticipate challenges and strive for the alignment of team members and project goals.
  • Identify activities on the critical path and work with various individuals to identify key issues and identify means to resolve all while ensuring continuous consistency with project strategy.
  • Enable and drive project strategy development and ensure execution of all cross-functional project activities.
  • Serve as neutral facilitator, communicate openly and timely, horizontally and vertically in order to achieve transparency of project progress and lead to resolve conflicts in good faith.
  • Apply knowledge of the industry and the competitive environment.
  • Provide direction to team members to complete assigned projects within allotted timelines and budgets.
  • Lead the recruitment of highly experienced project/program managers to build, and effectively manage, a high functioning team.



  • Bachelor’s degree required, with a concentration in a scientific-related discipline strongly preferred, plus 15+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of advanced education and experience and/or training.
  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, PharmD, PhD), and experience as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is highly desirable.
  • Deep experience managing and leading projects/programs at a pre-clinical and clinical stage within the biopharmaceutical industry is required –
  • Broad understanding of the drug development process and complexities therein is required.
  • Broad therapeutic area experience, but work within Ophthalmology, Pain, Gene Therapy or Hydrogel Technology experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously as well as effectively manage scope, time and cost of assigned projects.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated excellence in the planning and execution of strategies for project management, with a very hands-on approach.
  • Results oriented with exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Effective at conveying a vision, energizing others, establishing goals, delegating when appropriate, mentoring and coaching.
  • Successful cross functional experience, working with other functions to create excellence in project management and drug development.
  • Change agent with ability to advocate for best practices. Experience with operational excellence highly desirable.
  • Well-developed and effective team facilitation and leadership skills.
  • Genuine interest in “doing the work” and agility to see and fill gaps needed organizationally and operationally.
  • Clear strategic perspective in terms of knowing all the moving parts and making it all work together as things move from discovery research to early and late clinical development program.
  • Working knowledge of due diligence and asset evaluation to enhance portfolio to investors.
  • Broad-detailed knowledge of CMC support in correspondence to regulatory agencies i.e., Pre-IND, IND, CTA, BLA, MAA, etc.
  • Strong network of industry professionals and contacts to share ideas, obtain resources, and problem.
  • Outstanding communication and influence skills, with the ability to inspire confidence
  • Team player who leads by example, employs expertise and influence to encourage collaboration across departments, levels, and groups to achieve shared objectives.
