Sr Scientist / Engineer - Discovery

Manage the planning and execution of R&D sustained release/drug delivery activities of the company’s hydrogel-based drug product candidates including new technology and initial concept evaluation, prototype development and testing, preclinical execution, technical reporting and documentation.  Work with management and project team members to design and implement research or initial proof of concept program plans.  Oversee the execution of project tasks relevant to R&D and monitor the activities and deliverables.

• Explore pharmaceutical sustained release technologies, programs, and concepts, which are relevant to company and department objectives.
• formulate, design, and develop drug delivery prototypes for early-stage evaluation and external collaborations.
• Plan, oversee, and execute the characterization and analysis of drug product candidates assessed during formulation, in vitro and in vivo studies.
• Expand the current and develop new hydrogel technology for application in various routes of administration and therapies.
• Work independently or in a team setting, with the ability to act as Project Technical Lead.
• Serve as member on cross-functional project teams.
• Work with project teams to transfer processes from early stage to clinical product development
• Develop plans or estimates for R&D projects and programs in conjunction with the project team.
• Design, plan, execute, and report early stage non-clinical studies.
• Lead and perform as the subject matter expert in functional areas (such as: Controlled & Sustained Release, Drug Delivery, Biodegradable Microparticles, Polymer Chemistry).
• Perform data analysis, early concept assessment and summarize findings in technical documents to support transfer of early-stage concepts into product development phase
• Contribute in IP creation for exclusivity of developed technologies and programs.
• Supervisory Responsibilities:  May supervise 1 or more engineers or scientists

• BS +10 years, MS + 8 years or PhD +5 years in a related pharmaceutical discipline (Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Drug Delivery/Sustained Release, Biodegradable Microparticles, Hydrogel Technology, Pharmaceutical Science, Chemical Engineering)
• Experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology research and development
• Experience managing a small team of scientists / engineers
• An understanding of phase-appropriate drug product requirements and applicable manufacturing regulations including batch records, raw material selection and product specifications
• Knowledge of analytical techniques for characterization of complex drug product or sustained release systems
• Knowledge of pharmaceutical product development practices and regulatory requirements
• Experience setting up and maintaining laboratory and clean room environments is desirable
• Working Conditions:  A significant portion of the work is in a lab environment
